Break everything down to the smallest task, 2) start writing and annotating as early as you can and try to be consistent, and 3) set clear goals with your co-authors early on, I find turn-over is more important than "perfection". Starting from scratch is always daunting for me, so I have a word template with the classic IMRaD structure. This gives me a skeleton and feels more ""manageable"" than a white page, even though I don't know which will be the target journal. I scribble down the Methods section and add relevant publications for the intro and discussion as soon as I start the project.
