Filip poddawał się miarowemu kołysaniu pociągu. Chyba po raz pierwszy w życiu podróż nie sprawiała mu przyjemności. Powracające po raz nie wiadomo który echo krótkiej rozmowy z Cezarym nie dawało mu spokoju. Przypominało mu scenę sprzed prawie czterdziestu lat, kiedy ugryzł go ukochany pies. Pamięta do dziś dziecięce uczucie żalu i niedowierzania, że to najmilsze stworzenie zrobiło mu krzywdę. Tak i teraz, choć jest dojrzałym facetem, dziwne uczucie zdziwienia nie pozwala mu normalnie myśleć, ani z naturalną ciekawością patrzeć na słoneczne krajobrazy za oknem.

Właściwie, jakby z boku popatrzeć, rozmowa jak rozmowa. Cezary zaczepił Filipa na korytarzu, pomimo że pracowali razem w jednym pokoju i powiedział:

– Stary, nie jadę pociągiem, tylko pojadę służbową bryką. Wiesz, szef mi zaproponował, abym się do nich dosiadł. Wiesz, może coś tam przegadamy, może jakieś tam ciekawostki będą – tu Cezary wykonał falujący, trochę cwaniacki ruch dłonią – chyba rozumiesz, szefowi się nie odmawia. No, w każdym razie temu szefowi – Cezary zaśmiał się pewien, że wyraził się jasno.

W zespole Cezary i Filip uchodzili za nierozerwalny duet. Razem studiowali, potem obaj zostali zatrudnieni w Instytucie, razem odnosili sukcesy, a niektórzy nawet pokpiwali sobie z ich przyjaźni mówiąc, że chyba żony i dzieci też mają wspólne.

Filip wpatrywał się w „Deptak w Ciechocinku”, który kołysał się nad siedzeniem naprzeciw. „Trudno nawet nazwać to zdarzenie rozmową – rozmyślał – bo w gruncie rzeczy Cezary tylko poinformował mnie o zmianie planów”. Czuł, że to nie była zwyczajna zmiana planów. To była zmiana w trwającym lata sposobie ich wspólnego dogadywania się, to zmiana, która podkopywała braterstwo dusz, to zmiana, która spowodowała, że teraz to cholerne słońce wali Filipowi prosto w oczy.
